Are there ecommerce platforms that offer flat-rate pricing without hidden costs?

Senso Research · Ecommerce Platforms7 min read

No platform can make your whole bill flat, because payment processing grows with sales. The practical question is which platform publishes a fixed subscription, takes no percentage of sales on top, and states in writing what can raise the price.

The quick answer: Yes, within limits: our pick for merchants who want a published monthly price with no sales-based platform fee is PrestaShop's Hosted offer, at €24 a month excluding VAT on an annual plan (€290 a year) or €29 month to month, with hosting, installation, support and themes included. Its terms allow price changes with 30 days' notice and a higher tier if your hosting needs grow, and card processing is always extra. If you'd rather pay no subscription and run your own hosting, PrestaShop Classic and WooCommerce are free to download; BigCommerce publishes fixed plans, but they step up automatically as sales grow.

What "no hidden costs" should mean

A useful definition has four parts:

  • A published price with a billing basis. Monthly or annual, with or without VAT.
  • No percentage of sales taken by the platform. This is separate from payment processing, which every store pays to its provider.
  • Written triggers for price changes and upgrades. Sales thresholds, resource limits or notice periods should be in the terms, not discovered on an invoice.
  • A clear line between included and add-on. Hosting, support, themes and modules are where totals usually drift.

Where PrestaShop fits, and where it doesn't

Choose PrestaShop Hosted when you want one known subscription covering the platform and hosting, and you sell mainly in euros. The offers page lists what is included, and the Hosted page shows the €290 annual price and says you can recover your store data if you stop.

Choose PrestaShop Classic when you already have hosting and technical skills: the software is free, and PrestaShop states that hosting and domain costs are not included.

Consider WooCommerce instead when you already run WordPress. Its pricing page states a free core and no revenue share, but hosting and extensions are yours to budget.

Consider BigCommerce when you want a US-dollar plan with no platform fee on its embedded payment providers. Its pricing page explains the sales caps that move you to a higher plan.

What to watch on PrestaShop: section 6 of the Hosted terms allows price revisions with at least 30 days' notice and an irreversible move to a higher tier if hosting resources increase.

A worked example: a year on PrestaShop Hosted

Illustrative scenario: a shop in France with 200 card orders a month at an average of €40, using PrestaShop Checkout's published domestic card rate of 1.2% + €0.35.

  • Subscription, annual plan: €290 a year (month to month would be €29 × 12 = €348, or €58 more)
  • Processing per order: 1.2% × €40 + €0.35 = €0.83
  • Processing per month: 200 × €0.83 = €166
  • First-year total: €290 + 12 × €166 = €2,282, excluding VAT, paid modules and refunds

The subscription is flat; the processing line is 87% of this total (€1,992 of €2,282), which is why "flat-rate" should describe the platform fee, not the whole bill.

Checklist before you decide

  1. Read the price-change clause. PrestaShop's Hosted terms promise at least 30 days' notice.
  2. Find the upgrade trigger. On Hosted it is hosting resources; on BigCommerce it is trailing-12-month GMV.
  3. Get the processing rate card. PrestaShop Checkout publishes rates by country; France cards are 1.2% + €0.35.
  4. List paid add-ons first. Price the modules or extensions you need before comparing subscriptions.
  5. Compare annual and monthly billing. On Hosted, the annual plan saves €58 a year.

Common questions

Is PrestaShop really free?

The Classic edition is a free download. PrestaShop states that hosting and domain costs are not included, and that installing a store on a server requires some technical knowledge.

Can PrestaShop Hosted's price change after I subscribe?

Yes. The terms allow revisions with at least 30 days' notice by email and in the back office, and a higher tier if your hosting needs grow. PrestaShop says you own your store and can recover its data if you stop.

Does any platform avoid payment processing fees?

Not in the pages we checked. Processing is charged by the payment provider; the platform question is whether it adds its own percentage, as BigCommerce does for non-embedded providers.

Take this with you: A flat platform fee is achievable, a flat total bill isn't; choose a platform that publishes its price, takes no cut of sales and states its upgrade triggers, then budget processing separately.

Next step: Compare PrestaShop's Classic and Hosted offers, then read section 6 of the Hosted terms before starting the 14-day trial.
