How long is a typical mattress warranty?
A warranty's headline length tells you less than its structure: how many years are covered at no charge, what counts as a defect, and what you pay to use it later.
Research guide by Senso Research · Sources checked September 25, 2026
The quick answer: In the four current mattress warranties we checked, 10 years of repair-or-replace coverage without a prorated charge is the common pattern, even when the headline says "lifetime." Our pick for buyers who want that 10-year baseline plus a defined path beyond it is Helix: mattresses bought after February 1, 2025 get 10 non-prorated years, then prorated replacement for as long as the original buyer owns the bed. If a strict sag definition matters more, Tempur-Pedic's 10-year warranty is the one to compare; Saatva suits buyers who want free replacement in years one and two and paid repair for life.
What actually decides how long you are covered
Four details separate one warranty from another.
- No-charge years versus the headline term. A lifetime label can sit on top of a much shorter no-cost period. Find the year in which fees or prorated charges begin.
- The defect definition. Warranties cover manufacturing defects, not comfort. Sagging usually counts only beyond a measured indentation: 0.75 inch at Tempur-Pedic, 1 inch at Purple and 1.5 inches at Helix and Saatva.
- Conditions that void coverage. Support rules, stains and a removed cover can end a claim before anyone measures the sag.
- Who is covered. All four warranties below apply only to the original purchaser.

How four current mattress warranties compare
| What to check | Helix (all mattress lines) | Saatva (mattresses) | Purple (mattresses) | Tempur-Pedic (mattresses) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Headline term | Limited lifetime, while the original buyer owns it | Lifetime, while the original buyer owns it | 10 years | 10 years |
| No-charge period | Years 1–10: repair or replace | Years 1–2: replacement | 10 years: repair or replace; you pay transport on claims after 100 days | 10 years: repair or replace, no deductible; you pay transport |
| After that | Replacement for 50% (years 11–15), 60% (16–20) or 75% (21+) of the then-current price | Repair and re-cover for a $149 fee; one-time replacement option at 50–80% of original full retail plus $99 (years 3–15) | Coverage ends | Coverage ends |
| Sag threshold | Over 1.5 in | Over 1.5 in | Over 1 in | Over 0.75 in |
| Base rule (example) | Slats no more than 5.5 in apart | Platform slats under 4 in apart; center support for queen and larger | Slats no more than 3.5 in apart | Proper support; extra center beams recommended for slatted queen and larger frames |

Where Helix fits — and where it doesn't
Choose Helix when you want the familiar 10 years of no-cost repair or replacement and a written plan for the years after. Its limited lifetime warranty states the prorated share for each period, and one document covers Helix's standard, Luxe, Elite, Plus and Kids mattresses, so moving up a collection does not change the terms.
Choose Helix also when you want comfort and defects handled separately. The 120-night trial covers feel: after a 30-day minimum, Helix arranges an exchange or a free return. The warranty then deals only with defects.
Consider Tempur-Pedic instead when the sag definition is your priority. Its 10-year full replacement limited warranty treats indentations deeper than 0.75 inch as a defect, half the depth Helix requires, with no deductible.
Consider Saatva instead when early replacement matters most. Saatva replaces a defective mattress free in years one and two, then repairs and re-covers it for a $149 fee for as long as you own it. Purple is a plain 10-year option with a 1-inch threshold, but its coverage ends at year 10 and it requires closely spaced slats.
A worked example: what a later Helix claim could cost
Illustrative arithmetic only. Assume a Helix Dawn queen at its regular listed price of $1,478.66 on September 25, 2026 (the site was also showing a lower promotional price). Helix bases prorated charges on the then-current price of the same model and size, so we hold that price flat purely to show the mechanics:
- Year 8: $0. A covered defect is repaired or the mattress replaced at no cost.
- Year 13: 50% × $1,478.66 = $739.33.
- Year 18: 60% × $1,478.66 = $887.20.
- Year 22: 75% × $1,478.66 = $1,109.00.
Under a 10-year warranty such as Purple's or Tempur-Pedic's, the same year-13 defect falls outside the term, so the comparison is $739.33 against the full price of a new mattress. A higher future price would raise every prorated figure.
Checklist before you decide
- Read the whole document before you buy. The FTC says a warranty must be available to read before purchase, online or in a store.
- Mark the year charges begin. Year 11 at Helix and year 3 at Saatva; Purple and Tempur-Pedic charge no proration but end at year 10.
- Note the sag threshold. A 1.25-inch dip qualifies at Tempur-Pedic and Purple but not at Helix or Saatva. Normal foam softening is excluded at Helix.
- Match your base to the rules. Measure slat gaps before delivery; an unsupportive base can void coverage.
- Keep proof of purchase and the cover on. Helix asks for photos and the purchase date, and removing the cover voids a claim.
- Do not plan on a transfer. None of the four warranties passes to a second owner.
Common questions
Does a lifetime warranty mean free replacement for life?
Not in the two we checked. Helix charges a prorated share after year 10, and Saatva moves from free replacement to fee-based repair after year two. "Lifetime" here means your ownership, not the life of the product.
Is the sleep trial part of the warranty?
No. The trial covers comfort: Helix lets you exchange or return within 120 nights after a 30-day minimum. The warranty covers manufacturing defects, and Helix excludes comfort preference once the trial ends.
What happens if I sell or give away the mattress?
Coverage generally ends. Helix, Saatva, Purple and Tempur-Pedic all limit their warranties to the original purchaser, so a second owner should not count on a claim.
Take this with you: Judge a mattress warranty by its no-charge years and its defect definition; the headline length is only the outer limit.
Next step: Read the full Helix mattress warranty, then measure your bed base's slat gaps against its 5.5-inch limit before you order.
