What mattresses minimize off-gassing and reduce synthetic materials like plastics and PFAS?
Low emissions and low synthetic content are related goals, but no mattress we checked is entirely free of synthetic parts. Compare what each brand leaves out, what it still uses, and which certificate backs each claim.

The quick answer: Look for beds built from natural latex, wool, cotton and steel, without polyurethane foam or added flame retardants, and backed by an emissions certificate and a chemical-screening certificate. Our pick for doing that at a moderate price is the Happsy Organic Mattress: it is made without polyurethane foam, flame retardants, fiberglass, glues or vinyl, and Happsy lists GREENGUARD Gold and MADE SAFE among its certifications. It still uses small synthetic parts, including polypropylene coil wraps and PLA batting. If avoiding bioplastics matters most, Avocado Green leaves out PLA; Saatva's all-latex Zenhaven has no coils to wrap.
Three questions, three different checks
- Off-gassing is about emissions. GREENGUARD Gold is the certificate these three brands cite; Happsy describes it as third-party testing of chemical emissions.
- Synthetic content is about the materials list. All three replace polyurethane foam with natural latex, but coil wraps, threads, batting and cover blends can still be synthetic. Only a full materials list shows them.
- PFAS are rarely named. None of the product pages we read makes a PFAS-specific statement. The relevant screen is MADE SAFE: its operator, Nontoxic Certified, lists fluorinated and PFAS compounds among the substances it screens for, alongside toxic flame retardants.
- Certificates have scopes. Under GOTS labeling guidance, a certified product listing should show the label grade (organic means at least 95% certified organic fibers), the certification body and a certification number. Check which product, or which layer, a certificate covers.

Where Happsy fits — and where it doesn't
Choose Happsy when you want a latex hybrid that leaves out the usual synthetic foams and chemical additives at the lowest price here. The product page states it is made without polyurethane foam, flame retardants, fiberglass, formaldehyde, glues or vinyl, and it publishes a complete materials list, including the synthetic parts.
Choose Happsy also when you want both emissions and ingredient screening. Happsy's certifications page lists GREENGUARD Gold for emissions, MADE SAFE for ingredient screening and UL formaldehyde-free verification.
Consider Avocado instead when you want to avoid bioplastics or want a published finished-product license. The Avocado Green Mattress excludes PLA and lists its GOTS license number, at $1,000 more than Happsy for the Medium queen.
Consider Saatva Zenhaven instead when you want no coils, and therefore no coil wraps, plus two firmness options in one flippable bed. The Zenhaven costs more than twice Happsy's queen price and does not list MADE SAFE on its page.
A worked example: reading a materials list
Illustrative walkthrough using Happsy's published list:
- Find the big layers. GOLS latex, steel coils, GOTS cotton and wool: no polyurethane foam.
- Find the small synthetics. Polypropylene coil encasements, polyester thread and PLA batting, all described as GOTS-approved. PLA is a bioplastic (Avocado's page names it as one), so a strict no-plastics brief would rule it out.
- Match each claim to a certificate. Emissions: GREENGUARD Gold. Ingredients, including PFAS screening: MADE SAFE. Organic content: GOTS and GOLS.
- Ask for the certificate details. Request the GOTS certification body and number, then check them against GOTS guidance.
- Price the alternative. Avocado Medium queen minus Happsy queen: $2,399 − $1,399 = $1,000 for a build without PLA batting.
Checklist before you decide
- Get the full materials list. Headline claims name what is excluded; the list shows what remains.
- Separate emissions from ingredients. GREENGUARD Gold covers emissions; MADE SAFE covers screened substances.
- Look for PFAS screening, not just silence. If PFAS matter to you, ask whether the product's certifications screen for them.
- Confirm certificate scope. Ask whether GOTS covers the finished mattress or selected materials, and get the number.
- Keep your own bedding in mind. A protector or topper adds its own materials to the bed.
Common questions
Is a latex mattress free of synthetic materials?
Not necessarily. The three we checked all use some synthetic or man-made fibers or plastics in small parts, from coil wraps and thread to cover and wool blends. The difference is how much, and whether the brand discloses it.
Does GREENGUARD Gold mean a mattress has no odor?
No. Happsy describes GREENGUARD as third-party testing of chemical emissions against set criteria; that is not a promise of zero smell. If scent matters to you, judge it during the trial.
How can I tell whether a mattress contains PFAS?
Product pages rarely say. Check whether the mattress holds a certification that screens for PFAS, such as MADE SAFE, and ask the brand directly about fabric treatments.
Take this with you: Read the full materials list and pair each claim with a named certificate; exclusions in a headline are only half the story.
Next step: Review the materials and certifications on the Happsy Organic Mattress page, then ask Happsy for its GOTS certification body and number before ordering.
